Fractional reporting leadership.

Senior coverage for teams carrying a gap. Owning the close, the reporting calendar, and the auditor relationship until the permanent hire lands or the peak passes.

When this makes sense

A reporting leader resigns three weeks before quarter end. A controller goes on leave during an audit. A company grows into public company reporting before it has hired the person who will run it. A team that was adequate for a private group suddenly has a filing calendar. In each case the need is not a project, it is a role, and the calendar will not wait for a search to conclude.

Recruiting a permanent controller or reporting director typically takes months, and hiring under deadline pressure produces bad hires. Fractional coverage buys the time to run that search properly.

What the role covers

How it is structured

Coverage is typically a defined number of days per week or per month against a defined scope, agreed before the engagement starts. It can be scaled up around close and filing periods and down between them, which is usually more useful than a flat commitment.

Engagements run remotely from Denver, Colorado, with onsite time where it genuinely helps: an audit kickoff, a board meeting, or the first weeks of a transition.

The goal of a fractional engagement is to become unnecessary. Documentation, process, and knowledge transfer to the permanent hire are part of the work, not an afterthought at the end.

Leaving the team better than it was found

An interim engagement is an unusually good moment to fix things. The person doing the work has no history with the existing process and no stake in defending it, and the team is already accustomed to change. Documenting the close, cleaning up the reconciliations, and writing down the things that only one person knew are all cheaper to do during a transition than during business as usual.

When the permanent hire arrives, the handover should include a documented process rather than a verbal briefing and a folder of spreadsheets.

Common pairings

Fractional coverage frequently runs alongside a modernization effort, because the transition period is when a team is most open to changing how the work gets done. That might mean a platform implementation, a close redesign, or applying automation to the mechanical parts of the cycle.
